Week Who-Knows-Anymore: Individual Volleyball Coordination

For most everyone barely doing anything, there has been a lot going on in our neck of the woods.

For starters, I changed volleyball clubs!

You can follow my new club here: roteraben_ev on Instagram.

Here is the main workout playlist, using a volleyball the entire time! It is very hip and shoulder intensive. Enjoy!

Life Update: after 4 really fun seasons, I will not be returning to Dingolfing next season. I am so thankful to have been a part of two great teams that moved up divisions with @tv_dingos and thankful that aside from coronavirus that the #SGmafia🖤 would have been in position to move up also. And how great that crazily yelling #GoDingos for 2 years would end up becoming part of the club marketing! 🤩 I’m thankful to have gotten to know the club administrators, all the coaches, and all the awesome players as great friends these past years. 🙏🏼 It’s been a wild ride, and I’m excited for the next challenge. #GoDingos #DingoSwag #athletesabroad #hashtagvolleyballgoals #gratitudepost #CoachSwags

Day 32: VLOG Psalms w/ Swags, Part 3

Hi Leute!

I've had a wild week, but let's dig back into Psalms to finish this vlog series!

If you haven't caught the first two videos, you can here:

Psalms, Part 1
Psalms, Part 2

I was supposed to have gone to France these two weeks of Easter vacation, but c'est la vie! Hoping to return again another time soon instead.

And here's one of my favorite pictures from one of my favorite places in the south of Portugal, too, just for all of our travel needs not being met at the moment.

Day 25: Spreading Good Cheer

Hallo Leute!

Yes, we really have made it to Day 25. I remember talking about "Day 25" on Day 5 like it was ridiculously far away and unlikely.

And, yet, here we are.

But. Today was a great day!

We celebrated some team birthdays with a fun surprise...

And celebrities are really pulling through as some great people lately...

We have been watching The Office finally. Only took a lockdown to make Marc come around, and now he loves it.

Also, we have received fabulous feedback on our face mask ideas.

Another OBVIOUS idea for later: KNEE PADS.

Day 14: Semi-Quarantined Against CoVid-19

What up, Leute?!

I hope we are not just surviving, but also thriving.

We made it to Day 14!

(Not like that means anything at this point. Let's set records for the longest quarantine ever instead!)

Today's big accomplishment was that I built a tree!

For sure, if you see where any of these loose pieces may belong, TELL US.

We are staying in the house (with the exception of our daily neighborhood walk, where we proceed to be overly friendly with our "Hallo's" to every living thing we encounter) for another two days before making our first venture to the supermarket.

I know. WILD.

(Fun fact about our daily walks; we never go at the same time each day, but generally sometime between 11:00AM and 4:00PM. However, no matter what time we have gone walking, the three little boys who live at the end of street have literally been outside playing on their trampoline EVERY SINGLE DAY. It's the highlight of our walks, laughing at them.)

We are in good spirits and have recovered from our colds to the point where we won't be getting death stares for coughing in public.

Today, Marc made a super delicious shrimp and zucchini alfredo pasta. We are still in the process of finishing off the "leftovers" from the other pro players, but we have been really diligent in our meal planning and rationing. We would rather be responsible with the access to food that we have instead of just barreling through it in the first weeks and expecting everything to be the same on The Outside.

Please continue to be (or take this opportunity to learn to be) good stewards of your time, money, and resources!

Here is another workout for this week, because that's basically my entire life right now: typing and working out.

Week 1: Home Volleyball Workouts

Or "Home Volleyball Workouts During CoVid-19 AKA The Unprecedented Off-Year."

Hey Leute.

So basically, in just a couple of days since we've all been ushered into the Zombie Apocalypse, I've got sad and bored volleyball players who need something to do.

I know -- trust me, I KNOW (I changed my entire life for this) -- that a main reason we love volleyball is because of the team dynamic and our teammates. Practicing and playing games are fun because we are working together toward a common goal, pushing and supporting each other, all the while wearing The Winter Bikini (AKA volleyball uniforms).

ANYWAY, here are links, ideas, and all the ways I have trained in the off-seasons. By myself. In my house. For at least 15 off-seasons. So, if you REALLY miss volleyball, and at least have a medium-sized sports ball (soccer balls, basketballs, and even handballs can suffice) in your home, just commit to these training ideas, and you'll get a semi-pro contract next season!

[OK, maybe it won't work as well as it did for me, but these ideas will keep you up to speed and you'll be working on fine-tuning and be ready when practices do start again. ;)]

FOR PRO PLAYERS
See Pro Player Timeline posts and go straight to summer info.

The key to working out at home is creativity and resourcefulness. Start looking around your house for actual athletic equipment you do already have (jump rope, Theraband, exercise ball, foam roller, yoga mat, hand weights, medicine ball, etc.).

Then take another look. Canned food, stretchy belts, heavy boots/shoes, water bottles, towels, even FURNITURE. Anything that could be substituted for its sport variation can achieve nearly the same effect and results. Oh yes, and have you ever heard of STAIRS?

If you want specific core, arm, or leg workouts you can do at home, please message me directly via Instagram. If enough of you message me, I will probably make another post for those kinds of home workouts.

YOGA/MOBILITY

Here are 2 Yoga routines that I've used with my
Dritte Liga team targeting shoulders, back, hips, and knees.
We didn't have any injuries during that season and got 1st place!

Setting Circuit

(Make it more challenging by doing the repetitions in a row.
So if you mess up, start over at 0.)
See another variation HERE.

20 forward/backward hip circles: see video
5 elevators: while continually setting small sets, start standing up
and transition to laying down and back up to standing to count 1.
50 wall sets + 50 on left foot + 50 on right foot
50 1s-3s (Auf - Schuß) against the wall: set a 1 (short set)
to yourself, then a 3 direct against the wall.
20 wall setting sit-ups: set continually against
a wall while also doing sit-ups, see video.
50 front-under: see video
50 scissors: see video
5 elevators combined with front-under & scissors

*You can imitate several of these same wall exercises with forearm passing.*
*Setters should be setting 500-1000 sets per day.*

Ball control activities can be "boring," but every correct contact invested makes a huge difference on the court. Any great player will tell you that they do the same things over and over again. Tens of thousands of times. It's not boring when you understand the repetition is an investment in perfecting your game performance. So be mature about your love for the game and get your reps in when nobody is watching or pushing you.
Push yourself if you truly want to be great.
For serving/attacking, practice movements with throwing a tennis ball into the wall and ground at different angles.

Footwork Circuit

(please message via Instagram for more details)

2x10 lateral forward/backward jumps
3x20 line reach jumps
2x3x6 base to 1-step block no-jump (1/A/ß)
2x3x6 base to 3-step block no-jump (2/4/S)
3x3x4 base to 1-step block, land to open (1/A/ß)
3x3x4 base to 3-step block, land to open (2/4/S)

Jump Circuit 1

(set under 1 min/30 sec rest/3 sets)

10 step squat jumps
5 burpees
6 standing jumps
7 sumo squats
8 scissor jumps
9 3-count jumps

Jump Circuit 2

(set under 2 min/45 sec rest/3 sets)

20 squat jumps
20 1-leg step hops (Left & Right)
20 quick jumps (Front & Back, Left & Right)
10 max block touches
5 approaches x 3 (normal, attack cross body, attack away body)
*with 1 kg weights or even canned food is best!

So, ENJOY. And remember: ONLY BORING PEOPLE GET BORED!!!

8 Ways to Call the Shots with Referees

The relationship between referees and...EVERYONE in nearly every sport is a disgrace to sports and humanity, in general. The whole concept of creating sports stemmed from having too much leisure time in our mainstreamed society.

Free time is fun! Let's exercise! Let's create group games! Let's keep score!

I don't know when the idea of needing a game judge to "make it fair" came into play, but all of us in today's world only know organized sports exist with referees.

We have also experienced the cringeworthy bad decisions, lack of paying attention, or even actual lack of knowledge that referees can display. Hopefully, we have also had some good experiences with referees, but, unfortunately, nobody really ever highlights a job well done by the officials in amateur or professional sports.

I have been refereeing volleyball "for fun" since I was fourteen years old. Whether it was club or school tournaments, camps, or intramural sports, I had no problem standing around with a whistle and making sure nobody did anything outlandish. Even when most of my decisions were obviously correct, there would still be someone on the opposing side reacting poorly and trying to make my life harder.

I am by no means a career referee. I realized in the past decade or so of living abroad that refereeing is akin to parenting. I don't want to be a parent, so why on earth would I choose to be a referee?! I'll stick to playing, coaching, and agent-ing.

Referees are like parents because...
...they are supervising the situation.
...they are there to make sure you follow the rules.
...they call you out when you do something wrong.
...they punish you if you get into a fight.
...they usually try to talk some sense into you about how to do something better.
...they have to be brave enough to do the right thing.
...they have to manage wild emotions and reactions from everyone around them.
...they are doing a thankless job.
...they are not perfect, and everyone is a critic.

If you are a referee, more power to you! I am not personally interested in a job where people only like you if you do what they want, regardless of truth or reality. I know coaching can be tough in its own way, but the amount of time we are able to invest with our team is much different than just showing up in the gym every once in a while with the rule book.

Here's the thing about referees and sport culture, though: we need to do better. Referees will have their good days and bad days, but we could all be a lot better in making this relationship more positive. People are wrong in real life all the time; it doesn't make it okay for us to lose our minds and scream at them.

I have always understood that MY reaction to a referee decision was 100% a reflection of MY character. MY reaction--that I should have complete control of--is MY responsibility, and in no way reflects the intelligence of the referee. Whether I am "justified" in yelling at another person because I am right, or actually lying to use "gamesmanship" in my team's favor, these reactions are telling the people around me who I am - NOT who the referee is. And I am only building a bad reputation for myself, my team, and my club.

This is not who I want to be, and all athletes, coaches, and fans should also uphold their personal dignity in order to support the dignity of the referees.

Ultimately, referees are just trying to do their job. I have yet to meet a referee who really wants to do a bad job...and if a referee has an actual personal vendetta, it's probably because of a previous negative experience with the person (and their likely inappropriate response) involved.

I have been watching sports since literally the week I was born. I can count on one hand how many times I have seen a sports game truly decided by a bad referee call. Most of the time, one team or the other has underperformed. The best thing you can do as a player and team is to play your best, purest match possible, and not leave chance up to the referees. If you play well within the rules of the game, the better team will usually win, and the referees won't have very much to do with the end result at all.

Here are eight ways we can "call the shots" with the referees, making the relationship between the referees and everyone else more positive, and actually making a difference in sport culture where the referees don't have to play the part of the villain.

1. Be friendly: learn the referee's names.

2. Be respectful: make eye contact and have a conversation.

3. Be honest: don't complain about calls that you know are right; you're just making yourself look bad and won't be believable when you are telling the truth.

4. Give alternative suggestions: if the referee didn't see what you saw, have ready suggestions about how it may have been the ball, another player, or just miscommunicated.

5. Speak their language: even just key terms can go a long way.

6. Use open body language: approach the referee calmly and naturally, using facial expressions to communicate understanding and posture that signifies a discussion - not an argument.

7. Keep your team cool: maybe your team doesn't understand how to react properly, so just make sure they know to chill out because you will handle it and they don't have to worry about it.

8. Understand that it's a tough job: treat the referee as you would wish to be treated in that exact same scenario.

If you're still not convinced, put yourself in the shoes of the referee, and ask yourself, "If I make the right call, do I deserve to have people screaming at me?" And again, "If I make the wrong call, do I want to be screamed at, or given another chance to do better the next time?"

I hope you can do your part to contribute to positivity in sports, both for yourself and the culture as a whole!

VLOG: Pro Volley Instagram Takeovers!

Instagram Stories have created interesting opportunities for people to kind of broadcast what's happening during their day and what their lives are like. Instagram Story Takeovers are chances for someone to "takeover" the account for the day and show their version of their story, usually relating to whatever the profile represents.

On Sunday, April 7, 2019, I was asked to do a takeover for @HashtagVolleyballGoals. You can follow their informative feed for professional volleyball players on Instagram, and tag them in your posts with #hashtagvolleyballgoals, of course.

On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, I did an Instagram Story Takeover for the agency I work for, Elite Volley.

VLOG: Vitoria-Gasteiz & Festival of the Virgen Blanca

I had an absolutely perfect half week in the Basque country of Spain. One day to stroll San Sebastián, a few days to absorb the art that is Bilbao, and my day trip to Vitoria-Gasteiz - where I happened upon their Festival of the Virgen Blanca!

It was a bit haphazard, as I didn't know the schedule or where events were happening, but I stumbled upon enough great moments of games, food stands, and plaza dancing to keep my wandering entertained for the whole day.

Vitoria-Gasteiz is actually the government capital of the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain. The city is situated on several different levels that keep the visitor climbing beautiful steps to new terraced views, cathedrals, and squares. I am so glad I chose this city for my day trip! It was easy to take the bus from Bilbao to Vitoria-Gasteiz (around €6), then I chose to return to Bilbao via BlaBlaCar carpool (about €4) so I could practice my Spanish with the driver. Even without the festival going (always August 4th-9th), Vitoria-Gasteiz has so much to offer in history, architecture, and culture, and I hope you have the chance to experience it like I did.

8th Season Abroad: Go Dingos!!!

Can you believe it?! I know I can't!

What started as a baby pipe dream in 2008, grew a little bit bigger and real-life in 2010, then actually happened in 2011: I've started my eighth season of playing volleyball in Europe.

AMEN!!!

As mentioned over the summer, my team was able to move up a division, and we are now in the third level of German volleyball. We worked really hard and were able to get big wins over our first three opponents, until dropping our first match last weekend in Munich.

We are currently in third place and comfortable with the future wins ahead of us!

We have our next home match today, Saturday, October 28, at 17:00 (5:00 p.m.) Germany time (9:00 a.m. PST, 12:00 p.m. EST), and you can track the live score for our match via  updates HERE!

If you'd like to enjoy the totally crazy ambiance from our first home win against Chemnitz, it is on my YouTube channel! Be warned: it's a full five sets of shouting, and I miss a serve on a set point.

As far as diving head-on into another volleyball season at the lovely age of 31, I am feeling pretty good. My shoulder has regained so much of its normal mobility and control, it's like having a dear friend return back into my life. (I am not much for complaining about injuries on the blog; for one, it's not a super fun topic, and, for two, people from my clubs read these posts from time to time and I don't need injury rumors swirling around my already thirty-something reputation.)

About half of my team from last year returned, and most of the new players are girls I have practiced or played with over the past couple of years here. I love having the chance to be a returner on the team again, and it's been a really solid start for me with the offense.

This season will last until the first week of April, so if you're planning on visiting us, volleyball will be until then! I also plan to upload more matches this year to be viewed online, and I am hoping to live stream a home match or two!

There is one overwhelming emotion throughout this entire volleyball abroad journey: gratefulness. No matter how "normal" this life becomes, or how "routine" going to practice gets, or even how tough the games can be - I am so thankful.

We don't get to plan this kind of stuff in our lives. I was thrilled to have my first three months in Belgium. Everything, everything, and I mean everything, has been the kind of blessing and bonus that is so grand I never would have dreamed of asking for it.

But, the best thing about this season? After each point, our team gathers in the middle of the court to scream, "GO DINGOS!!!" at each other. #GoDingos

This is rad. This is my team now.

All photos and videos are courtesy of our ever-generous team manager, Armin. You can see more of his sports photography skills on his Flickr account!

New Work, New Season, New Vision

Sometimes you don't realize you've been waiting for something until whatever it is shows up and you can't believe you've been without it for so long.

Other times you know exactly what you've been waiting for, but it's hard to tell when the right timing will align with everything else in your life.

A post shared by Christy Swagerty (@whatupswags) on
Back in November, I totally checked out from blogging. I stayed online through my Instagram account, but I was burned out from blogging, updating, sharing, etc., etc., etc.

I decided to wait until I was interested again. Or maybe until I was interesting again. Just kidding; I did tons of stuff this year, too, like always!

I had some moments of photo gallery blogs to keep a base update going. My sister, Lindsay, continued posting her incredible Live Well series. I don't know what I would have done without her effort and expertise this year to give my blog life.

My last six months have been characterized by both of these kinds of "wait times," and I'm thrilled to announce that the wait is over.

I'm not going to binge blog like I used to because that's what made me feel like a robot churning out information. My website has always been about my experiences and stories, not for the Travel Channel. I needed to learn that again, absorb it, and return to the blog with fresh words.

I am much more passionate about the connection between sports and living abroad. The traveling that happens along the way is just a bonus.

I have two exciting announcements!!!

1. My Dingolfing 4th division volleyball team finished in 2nd place! This was cool enough, in and of itself, but then we just found out this week that the 3rd division needed an extra team and we have been bumped up a league!

This can happen sometimes, but it's never something that can be counted on in advance. We did work hard to get 2nd place, and with a little bit of extra luck, we have been rewarded in the best way possible!

You can enjoy some of the game photos and our best match of the season.

Oh, and I suppose the second part of the first announcement is that I am indeed returning to play in Dingolfing for at least two more seasons!!!

2. I have started a new job! My next post will detail this in a much more in-depth way, but here's the why and how of it. I have been keeping my ear to the ground (waiting, waiting, waiting) for a location-independent job that only needs an internet connection. This is incredibly important for me as I am now relying on Marc's basketball jobs for wherever we will live. With this new work, I have full location flexibility.

But the best part of it is that it's what I am most passionate about: sports and living abroad.

You can check out my staff bio at Elite Volley, and see if you're interested in any of the services we have to offer. Next post will have all the info, so you can stay tuned for that as well.

Want to see how I got the job? Be warned: the main requirement was to be creative!

(Special thanks to the many friends who contributed to this video!!!)

That's the main news from Swags! I'm embarking on my giant trip of the year on Monday. We are doing the USA a little bit different this year, going through Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. Then I head back to France to visit friends in Paris and the south, play some volleyball in Annecy, and end in Switzerland before taking the train back to Vilsbiburg in June!

Instagram will, of course, have all that insanity on it, and I will be updating the site in a much more reasonable manner now, too.

I will also be back-posting some of my adventures from this year as I have time during the summer. These will include my days spent in Milan, Lake Como, Baden-Baden, Hallstatt, and a whole lot of Salzburg. There were also many wonderful moments with our friends here in Vilsbiburg and Landshut, as the day-to-day life continues to support and enrich our world here.

If you're reading this, that means you've stuck around, so thank you for that. I guess we can say that, in the end, it looks like we are all going to get what we have been waiting for.

Check back in the next few days for the Elite Volley post!
