Christmas Mug Winners!

Well, that was quite the Christmas marathon!

In a dash of rare 2020 optimism, I busted into Christmas mode by mid-November with this giveaway idea.

I am really very glad that I chose to send my Christmas mugs all over the world, but don't count on me doing this every year.

I am super thankful for all the friends who participated and got as excited about Christmas mugs as I did, but I was also surprised that there was not a larger participation in donating to the charities highlighted each week. I know not everyone had the financial wiggle-room to send money away this year, but I felt really compelled to give to those who needed it more than me this year.

So here's to hoping the feedback was inaccurate and more people donated than admitted it! ;)

At least we can all agree that 2020 was highlighted with not just one, but TWO, fabulous new albums from the greatest poet of our lifetimes, Taylor Swift.

The mugs heading to America are still stuck in US shipping customs, but thanks and congrats to all the winners, near and far!!!

20 Things the Pandemic Made Me Do

So, Leute.

I think, at this point, we can safely assume that ALL of us have different lives since the pandemic has been affecting everyone for about nine months now.

In the air of Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do," here are
20 Things the Pandemic Made Me Do.

#1
Go to the bathroom just to cough.
(The walls aren't soundproof, but the glares are at least avoided.)

#2
Wear ALL my winter clothes as soon as it started raining or the temperature dropped below 60 degrees F.
("You look like an Eskimo." "Yes, yes, I do. A corona-free Eskimo.")

#3
Keep my mask on to cover acne.
("What?! Oh, I just forgot to take it off...")

#4
Judge people for blowing their nose in public.
(Read #1: that's what the bathroom is for!)

#5
Re-watch Netflix's Virgin River series.
(For those of you who can't imagine this being an actual place, anyone who has lived in the true Northern California can attest to the fact that these stories can be more than real!)

#6
Buy flowers for my house.
(I have always been adamantly against decorations and flowers. Enter 2020 with Emily in Paris, exit previous life rules.)

#7
Do a Giveaway on Instagram. AND promoting charities!
(I literally hate sharing. HATE IT. Now I am giving my money and treasured Christmas mugs away.)

#8
Vote.

#9
Shop online.
(Maybe because of #7, I feel the need to replace what is being sent off?)

#10
Ask my parents to send a care package from the USA.
(They haven't shipped me anything from America since, like, 2012 because of the high cost and I have managed super efficient trips for goods. Not anymore!)

My one day outside of Germany in 2020.
#11
Imagine I am walking around all of those city-tripping places I would normally go to, instead of just Vilsbiburg.
(Normally, I would spend December marching around Christmas markets. Now I get to access the deep reserves of my memories and creativity.)

#12
Buy wrapping paper and actually wrap Christmas gifts for the first time since 2010.
(So much for experiences trumping presents! This year presents are king and the experience is the wild card of it all.)

#13
Start Christmas insanity in October.
(What was the point of waiting?!)

#14
Learn how to administer CoVid-19 rapid tests.
(I make everyone call me Dr. Swags now.)

#15
Not reply to personal emails.
(I don't know why this ended up being a side effect of the pandemic, but my inbox has never been this overflowing and ignored.)

#16
Walk through the Vilsbiburg cemetery.
(Really. First time in five and a half years, and even after my mom loved it when they visited last October.)

#17
Finish my postcards wall collage...again.
(Realized it was better to post the cards on a poster to the wall, instead of directly onto the wall.)

#18
(I swear I did it for the kids...)

#19
Need to paint mermaid nails.
(Just another one of those things that is, all of a sudden, way more important than it ever was before.)

#20
Ride a thrift-store bicycle with flat tires all over Vilsbiburg.
(Kind of not hating it so much anymore!)

I won't lie, I was more hoping that the pandemic would "make me" write more books. And while I definitely got around to reading much more than usual, my writing has been so pandemic-focused. It was difficult to dig into creative stories without the filter of the pandemic shading them. I have been both pleasantly surprised by some of my new activities, as well as annoyed by some changes, but all for the best.

I have said it for several months now, and I will say it again: what we all need the most for ourselves and for each other these days is GRACE. So I have forgiven myself for wanting to buy pretty flowers, I have forgiven the kids who don't have the emotional energy to come to volleyball practice, and I am regularly forgiving myself and everyone else around me for stressed words, overreactions, and under-reactions.

Hope you are staying safe and well, and please be careful and wise with more holidays approaching!!!

What are some "out-of-character" things the pandemic has made you do?
Do you think you will keep these new habits up,
or avoid them if and/or when life gets more back to normal?

6 Weeks of Christmas Mugs GIVEAWAY

This Christmas season is going to be a bit less brilliant and sparkly than in other years... but that doesn't mean we can't still make it special!

In many ways, it will be one of the most unusual -- and, therefore, naturally special -- Christmases we will ever experience.

Most of my family and friends would be at a loss to remember the best or most recent Christmas gift I had given to them... mainly because I am not a big "gift-giver."

However, in light of all of us needing to find space to pivot and grow during this dark season of global suffering and struggle, what say we pop into the month of December with a little extra fun?!

Enter, the "6 Weeks of Christmas Mugs Giveaway!"

Starting this Thursday, each week I will go live on Instagram to show which mug will be up for grabs, sharing the stories behind that specific German Christmas market and time(s) I spent there.

Essentially, since we will likely be limited in making new memories at Christmas markets this season, I am very happy to share my Christmas memories from these mugs and you can "borrow" the memories forever with the mug!

Each week will have a little bit different "voting" system, but I promise none of it will be fraudulent, and no mugs will be mailed to dead people. ;) However, mug winners can win more than once!

Thursdays will be the mug "showcase," Sunday evenings I will count the entries, and Mondays will be the announced winners!

There are six (6) mugs in total that I am willing to part with this season, so the dates to tune into my Instagram account @whatupswags will be November 19, 26, December 3, 10, 17, and 24!

I will mail the mug (and some other goodies) to the address of your choice. All I ask in return is that when the mug arrives, you take a picture of yourself holding it and post it to your Instagram account with me tagged and #ChristyKindlMarkts (watch for the crazy spelling, sorry, it's German + my brain)!

(Of course, if you're a local in Bayern somewhere, I can bring the mug directly to you.)

Oh, wait, I lied; I ask one more thing: that you use the mug as much as possible this Christmas season and have a very, very Merry Christmas!!!

Fancy Firenze

What a fancy week in Florence for Christmas! We were so lucky to get to spend this week with Marc's dad, Tom, too! I think we got a little maxed out on Italy after this week, but we made some great memories, nonetheless, and hope you enjoy these photos from our Christmas trip!

Not pictured: watching Star Wars in the beautiful Odeon Theater, seeing the opera Carmen performed in St. Mark's Church, and a lot of food and aperitivo that we ate too fast to take pictures!

Starter Day in Siena, Italy

Whether you have the chance to stay in Siena over an extended period of time, or you're just in town for the day, Siena has plenty to offer in sights, walks, and Italian history. I was able to spend a sunny early afternoon in Siena on a day trip from Florence during our Christmas trip this year.

*I would note that there are several articles on the internet about whether or not to take the bus or train from Florence to Siena. I decided to take the bus there, but after a crazy trip of winding roads and listening to a child vomit several times, I definitely opted to return to Florence by train. The price is only about €1 different, and the train had an easy and familiar comfortable cadence to it. If you take the train, then it's simple to take a Siena city center bus to the main square, or you can opt to use the extensive escalator system that lifts you from the train station at the bottom of the hill all the way up to the historical city center. I personally enjoyed walking downhill from the center and seeing a few extra sights on my way back to the train station.

Once you've made your way into the city center of Siena, there are lots of options of churches, museums, and piazzas to enjoy. Here is a great starter list for your first time in Siena to get to know the city.

Piazza Giacomo Matteoti

Most visits to Siena will start in this main transportation square. In December, there is a Christmas market, and several places to eat and have a coffee. Additionally, around the rectangular piazza are three churches to get you started: Santo Stefano alla Lizza, Chiesa di Sant'Andrea, and Chiesa di San Pellegrino alla Sapienza.

Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena

Walking towards the town center, you'll pass by the courtyard of the historical bank of Siena. It's great for a photo backdrop or snacking on a cornetta and to-go cappucino!

Nannini

There are several Nannini cafes around Siena, and it's the place to go for gelato. So whenever you see a Nannini, pop in for a quick fruity or chocolatey combo that you can walk with to...

Piazza del Campo

This is the main center square of Siena. Many say that it's one of the best squares in all of Europe. It's a very interesting clam shell shape, descending down to the large castle-like government building in the middle. All the restaurants on Il Campo are a bit pricey, but nothing is outrageous, and worth it to enjoy a snack, meal, or drink on one of the most fantastic areas to people watch in Italy. You can also climb lots of steps up the Torre del Mangia for a complete overview of the square and Siena.

Duomo di Siena

What a beautiful plaza and church! I didn't have the time to go inside, but all the photos and reviews say it's worth it and gorgeous. It's really different from most Tuscan churches, both on the outside and inside.

Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico

On another nearby hill, you can make your way to the huge basilica. Not only is the church great to explore, but the views of Siena from this hill are fabulous!

Fortezza Medicea

Another angle for great views, nice walking paths, and even a lovely area to jog in, is the massive fort downhill from the town. It can be tricky to find the ramp to get up to the ramparts, but just make your way to the north side of the fortress and head on up!
